Burn the 1911 Table

The Issue

TRIGGER WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE

Recently, an Instagram page called @cwru.survivors was created. Many survivors at Case Western Reserve University have reached out to speak about their experiences involving sexual assault, harassment, and more at Case. The submissions have revealed a right of passage for Fiji members. The 1911 experience involves having sexual intercourse on a table in the library. Sometimes this is consensual, other times are not. Often times, women are not aware of the meaning of the act and become both objectified and ridiculed. The goal of this petition is to have the table both removed and destroyed. By not doing so, a clear message is sent. Not getting rid of the table would continue to allow the objectification of women and suggest that the brave survivors spoke up for nothing. Allowing the table to remain promotes more acts of sexual assault and rape. We as a community need to stand up for one another and abolish rape culture, which has recently been revealed to be a major issue at Case. By signing this petition, you are supporting taking a step towards ending rape culture and showing survivors that we will stand with them as a community. After gaining enough signatures, the petition will be sent to CWRU Greek Life and the Executive Director of Public Safety, Frank Demes. This is a fight that we cannot win alone.
