Save the Hong Kong Boar

The Issue

The Hong Kong Boars are a local treasure and are indigenous to HK. They were a protected species but due to an unfortunate and isolated incident on Nov 10 2021 where a police officer got attacked by a boar, they got taken off the protected list and the government is now taking the stance of killing boars which are found in urban areas. The police officer is fine but the boar involved in the incident died, and a few days later 7 boars were captured and euthanised. Boars attacks are very unusual, and if they occur it is only because they are provoked. For a wealthy developed city with huge resources resorting to these culling measures are barbaric and uncalled for. Leung Siu-fai, director of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, says only those posing a threat to the public in built-up areas were being targeted under the new strategy. I believe boars have the right to live in the city, but if they must be removed then what is the issue with just relocating them, why do they have to be killed? The argument that these measures were used in the past but have not worked is not compelling. Removing them is removing them, either by euthanasia or relocation the result is the same, so why not continue with the non-barbaric one? Focus on educating the public and using non-lethal measures. For such an advanced society it is inconceivable that this is not possible.
