Why this petition matters

Started by Karolina Molnar

My name is Karolina Castellani and I am a vegetarian. My family is vegetarian. I drink Almond Milk, Soy Milk, Coconut Milk because it is supposed to be a healthy alternative to regular dairy milk.

Well, let me think again !

When I came across this very disturbing information about Carrageenan being an ingredient in products I consume every day I decided to write to the companies like Silk, Blue Diamond Almond Breeze and Taste the Dream asking them why is Carrageenan a necessary ingredient in their products.

Well, while I was waiting for an answer and I am still waiting, I have decided to start this petition hoping to reach out to the public and ask to support the idea of pledging these companies in removing Carrageenan from their products.

EVERY $1 HELPS. Donate at

Donating as little as $1 dollar, you are making a priceless difference in helping American Cancer Society is their further research and saving lives of people suffering from gastrointestinal and colon cancer.

About 112,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer annually, and about 41,000 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed each year, according to the American Cancer Society

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), the lower part of your digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of the last 6 inches of the colon. Together, they're often referred to as colorectal cancers.

Carrageenan is an emulsifier used in organic juice, yogurt, chocolate milk, and other dairy products and non-dairy alternatives.

Almond Milk has it !

Soy Milk has it !

Coconut Milk has it !

Our dairy and meat products have it !

Carrageenans or carrageenins are a family of linear sulfated polysaccharides that are extracted from red seaweeds. They are widely used in the food industry, for their gelling, thickening and stabilizing properties. Their main application is in dairy and meat products, due to their strong interactions with protein.

Why is carrageenan dangerous?

Here is what a number of doctors and health researchers have to say.

Dr. Mercola writes: “A number of studies have found that the widely used food additive carrageenan causes cancer in food animals and its use in human foods should be reconsidered…enough evidence exists about the cancer-causing effects of carrageenan to limit the use of this food additive.

Per Dr. Ray Peat, PhD, It has been found to cause colitis(inflammation of the large intestine/colon) and anaphylaxis (life threatening allergic reaction) in humans.

Dr. Andrew Weil says, “Carrageenan can cause ulceration and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract.”

FDA(Food and Drug Administration) & NOSB (National Organic Standards Board) approves it !

In 1972, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed limiting the type of carrageenan that could be used in food. But the regulatory effort was rescinded in 1979.

For decades carrageenan was presumed safe to eat, but new research has shown that it can cause health problems - and should be avoided. The method by which it is processed - using strong alkali solvents is also questionable. These solvents could remove the tissues and skin from your hands - it is that toxic.

At the May 2012 meeting in Albuquerque, the NOSB carried out their legally mandated "sunset" review of carrageenan, and, despite disturbing evidence that this synthetic ingredient causes digestive problems and cancer, decided to allow it in organic for another 5 years.

Our Favorite Manufacturers Use it our Food !

Just to name a few ....

Companies lobbying the NOSB to continue to allow carrageenan included the J.M. Smucker Co. brands Santa Cruz Organic and R. W. Knudsen Family, the Dean Foods brands White Wave and Horizon Organic, the Group Danone brand Stonyfield Farm, and farmer-owned Organic Valley. Independently-owned Eden Foods, on the other hand, which used carrageenan in its chocolate soy milk, pledged to remove it.

You are what you eat - spread the word and let's make this world a better Organic place.
