Why this petition matters

Started by Freedom Fast

Opelo and Florence Kgari, a mother and daughter from Botswana, have lived in the UK for 14 years - since Opelo was just 13. Since 18 January 2018, they have been detained at Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre, uncertain of their future in the UK.

Despite Opelo having lived in the UK for more than half her life, the UK Home Office is trying to remove her from the country. We call on Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes MP to intervene in this high profile case.

A decision to allow them to stay would be a first step towards achieving a more humane immigration system based on fairness and decency.

For much of last month, people at the Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre went on hunger strike to highlight the treatment of people detained there. Although the hunger strike is now over, nonviolent protests continue - as do the injustices that prompted them.

Amongst the demands of people detained at Yarl’s Wood, is the call for an amnesty for people who have lived in the UK for more than 10 years and an end to the detention of people who came to the UK as children.
