Stop the redistricting of Lakota Local Schools

We the undersigned strongly oppose the redistricting of Lakota Local Schools.
This unfavorable change was planned without proper presentation to the public or the opportunity for the community to voice questions, opinions, or potential alternate solutions.
Redistricting neighborhoods can have a detrimental effect on community members by decreasing property values. Many families in the area have purchased their homes in order to be in close proximity with Hopewell Elementary and Hopewell Junior School. The loss of this seven year campus would likely lead to less demand and lower home values in the affected neighborhoods. The neighborhoods surrounding these schools have a high demand and value that is attractive to potential buyers. Economic studies have shown that altering school district boundaries can have a negative impact on home values.
There will be a substantial change in the travel times to and from school, some children having an increase in travel distance of approximately six miles each way. This is a dramatic increase for young children that are already exhausted from a long day away from home. Traffic patterns within the community will increase and the potential for accidents will increase in an already congested morning commute, which can endanger the safety of our children. There has been no mention of the increase in cost of transportation which will require a tremendous increase of required fuel and hourly wages for bus drivers.
The lack of consistency in the school environment at such a young age can negatively impact our children. Children need a regular routine and consistency. The constant changing of school location, routine, division of friends and need to make new ones, and teaching staff and administration can result in discomfort, anxiety and a lack of familiarity and trust of staff. This can greatly hinder the child’s educational experience.
As our community continues to grow, so will the need for classroom space which makes the redistricting a short term, questionable solution.
While it is not required for an item to be on the agenda prior to a vote, any change of this magnitude should be properly presented to the public and not hidden behind closed doors.
