Change UC Berkeley Spring Grades to be Pass/No-Pass AND Counted as Major Requirements

The Issue

With all lectures, discussions, and labs going completely online, these classes have become much more difficult. Students no longer have access to in-person office hours, study sessions, and tutors which are greatly needed for most (if not all) classes at UC Berkeley. Thus, even attaining a passing grade, let alone an A or B, in any given class has become extremely arduous.

In addition, the stress from this pandemic continues to affect students' studies. Many families are feeling the pressure from being forced from work and dealing with apocalyptic conditions at supermarkets and any public environments, which is another burden to students.

Therefore, we call for the option of all classes at UC Berkeley to be graded as pass/no pass AND MORE IMPORTANTLY still count all these P/NP classes as meeting major requirements (i.e. count as an upper division elective for a student's major should this apply).

Petitions are being heard at USC and other American institutions, while the University of Toronto HAS ALREADY IMPLEMENTED THESE CHANGES.

We hope that the University of California Berkeley, Carol Christ, Marc Fisher, and UC Regents consider making this change for the health and well-being of their students in a time of unsurmountable stress and great uncertainty. Please support your students and their families.

If top athletes cannot/are not able to perform in these conditions, the same must apply for the top students.
