Return my kids now, social worker Carol Ankiewicz
The Issue
Social workers abduct and sell children.
There is money to be made. Couples offer social workers between R30 000 and R80 000 a child (about 5 months of their average take home). The highest recorded price is R600 000.
The demand is high. 15% of couples in South Africa are infertile. IVF is expensive and uncertain (R60 000 for 2 treatments). The supply is low. The Termination of Pregnancy Act in 1996 and the widespread availability of child grants sharply cut the number of voluntary surrenders.
How it works. Adoption clients pose as foster parents offering temporary care. The Children's Act of 2005 gives designated child protection organisations the power to place a child at risk in temporary care. Social workers use excuses to strip vulnerable families of their children and give them to their clients. They ask the Children's Court for 2-year placement orders and stretch them forever. They secretly bad-mouth the parents so the Children's Courts and police won't listen when they want their children back.
Veronica Oosthuizen never thought her son would be abducted. She is a vulnerable parent. She is unemployed. She is not married to the father. They live apart. Their son is with dad while she looks for work. He is a good dad. He had an argument with his other son. Social worker Carol Ankiwiecz came and removed both boys. Her excuse? "Your son is a witness". She placed them with a foster family. She tells Veronica they are not coming back. She has cut off all contact and hidden their address. She is changing their school. These are signs of permanent placement.
Ms Ankiwiecz, if you followed the law you would not take the boys or you would place them with their moms. You did not. You gave 2 children to a couple who say they want to adopt 2 children. No one is saying you sold them but you can prove that you didn't by giving them back to their family.
