MAYOR OF SAN JUAN: STOP THE KILLING OF THE COMMUNITY CATS IN OLD SAN JUAN

The Cats of La Puntilla in Old San Juan are in imminent danger of being killed and we need your help to stop it.

The mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulin Soto, used as one of the pillars of her political campaign the defense of animals. This earned her the support of many people and organizations within the animal welfare community, moving beyond partisan politics. For this reason, we ask the honorable mayor to deliver on the promises given in her electoral speech and intervene to protect the cats from La Puntilla from being slaughtered. 

The Condominium La Puntilla, located in the area of ​​La Puntilla in Old San Juan, for decades had cats living around its complex. Due to the lack of proper architectural barriers, some of them enjoy the shade offered by the common areas of the complex. Several residents have made it their task to regularly feed them and many others have welcomed their presence. However, recently, the Condominimum's new administration has decided to carry out a mass collection and subsequent slaughter of the area cats. Mr. Ovidio Gonzalez, the president of the Board of Title Holders of the Condominium La Puntilla, granted a week to the residents of the condominium to adopt the local cats before the upcoming collection. This decision was taken without consulting the residents and it does not have the support of all the members of the board of the title holders nor of the local community. 

Individuals and animal welfare organizations have offered options and resources to the condominium to help control the cat population in this particular area. This is a small cat colony whose cats are scattered over a wide area that includes parking lot La Puntilla, U.S. Coast Guard base and Paseo de la Princesa. More than half of them have already been sterilized and vaccinated within the last few months. The remaining will be spayed and vaccinated if there is a commitment from the present and the future Board of Title Holders of the complex that the cats will not be killed. Mr. Ovidio González has rejected all the proposed alternatives.

For more than a decade, non-profit organizations, residents and visitors of the Old San Juan have been investing time, money and efforts to feed, control and treat this cat population through TNR. Trap - Neuter - Release —or TNR, for its acronym in English— is the only humane, worldwide, mechanism that has proven effective in managing many cat colonies. Cats are humanely trapped, sterilized, vaccinated and then returned to where they were trapped, to their HOME. However, limited resources -—supported by only volunteer work and a few grants— AND rampant abandonment of unsterilized animals in Old San Juan keep on presenting huge obstacles that always keep the TNR work unfinished.

Honorable Mayor: We are calling upon you to demonstrate your commitment to the animals of San Juan by STOPPING THIS IMMINENT SLAUGHTER OF INNOCENT COMMUNITY CATS.

Los gatos de La Puntilla en el Viejo San Juan están en INMINENTE PELIGRO de ser asesinados y necesitamos su ayuda para detenerlo.

La alcaldesa de San Juan, Carmen Yulín Soto, usó como uno de los pilares de su campaña electoral su defensa por el bienestar animal. Esto le ganó el apoyo de muchas personas y organizaciones dentro de la comunidad pro-bienestar animal, más allá de las creencias político-partidistas. Por tal razón, le pedimos a la honorable alcaldesa que actúe de acuerdo a las promesas de  su discurso electoral e intervenga para proteger los gatos de La Puntilla, evitando esta  inminente masacre.

El Condominio La Puntilla, ubicado en el área de La Puntilla en el Viejo San Juan, ha tenido por décadas la presencia de los felinos en sus inmediaciones. Debido a la falta de barreras arquitectónicas, algunos de ellos disfrutan de la sombra que ofrecen las áreas comunes del complejo. Varios residentes han hecho su tarea el alimentarlos regularmente y muchos otros tienen a beneplácito la presencia de los mismos. Un reciente cambio en la administración del complejo, sin embargo, ha tomado la decisión de llevar a cabo un recogido masivo y consecuente matanza de los mininos. El señor Ovidio González, presidente de la Junta de Titulares  del Condominio La Puntilla, otorgó una semana para que los residentes adoptaran los animales del área antes de proceder con la matanza. Esta decisión fue tomada sin consultar a los residentes y no cuenta con el apoyo de todos los miembros de la junta de titulares.

Personas y entidades pro-bienestar animal han ofrecido opciones y recursos para ayudar a controlar la población en ésta área en particular. Esta es una pequeña colonia cuyos gatitos están dispersos en un área amplia que incluye el estacionamiento La Puntilla. Más de la mitad de ellos ya fueron esterilizados y vacunados en un plazo de dos meses. Los restantes serán tratados tan pronto exista un compromiso de parte de la administración de que no serán asesinados. Todas las alternativas han sido rechazadas por el Sr. González.

Organizaciones sin fines de lucro, residentes y visitantes del área, han invertido con enorme sacrificio cuantiosos esfuerzos en alimentar, controlar y tratar esta población de gatos a través de TNR por más de una década. Trap-Neuter-Release —o TNR, por sus siglas en inglés— es el único mecanismo que ha probado mundialmente ser efectivo en manejo de colonias de gatos. Los gatos son atrapados de forma humana, esterilizados, vacunados y luego devueltos al lugar en que se atraparon, es decir, SU HOGAR. Sin embargo, tanto la limitación en sus recursos —trabajan apoyados por voluntarios y donaciones— como la cultura de abandono animal que aún prevalece en la isla, son enormes obstáculos que hacen interminable el trabajo de TNR.

Honorable Alcaldesa: haga valer su compromiso con los animales de San Juan y DETENGA ESTA INMINENTE MASACRE.
