Petition updateStop selling unsafe, recalled cars to consumers.CarMax under fire over how it advertises cars that are unsafe
Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety

Dec 20, 2016
CarMax is once again the target of attention, over how it sells unsafe recalled cars with safety defects that have killed or maimed people. Defects like bad brakes, loss of steering, catching on fire, faulty seat belts, air bags that launch metal fragments that can cause passengers to bleed to death, child safety seat anchors that fail, hoods that fly up in traffic, and other safety defects
This time, it's the Federal Trade Commission, which is critical of how CarMax advertises its certified cars. Unfortunately, what the agency is proposing as a solution would not actually stop the false advertising.
Bottom line for consumers: NEVER believe what a dealer tells you, in writing or in advertising, or to your face, about the safety of a car. It's too risky. Do your own homework, and if car is under a safety recall, refuse to buy it. Many dealers are now selling cars they know are unsafe, and cannot be fixed, maybe for years. YIPES. Don't fall victim to an unscrupulous car dealer like CarMax.
