Save the Picton Monument in Carmarthen

The Issue

To the Councillors of Carmarthenshire County Council and the "Task & Finish Group",

As you are currently reviewing the Picton Monument, we the undersigned wish to convey our strong belief that it should remain unchanged, exactly as it is.

This monument was not erected to celebrate every facet of the man, nor to express admiration for every action he took or word he uttered. It stands proudly in the town of Carmarthen to honour one thing – the life he gave at Waterloo.

Nobody truly believes this monument honours either slavery or racism. It has been hijacked, its meaning twisted, by a small number of people who wish to attack our history and undermine our identity.

There are not many public voices currently speaking for the silent majority who value the preservation of our heritage, but please don’t mistake that for apathy. Or, worse, believe that the people of Carmarthenshire, Wales or the UK support the current run-away cancel culture. They do not.

The Picton Monument needs no ‘interpretation’ added to it. If anyone is interested to know more about Picton’s life, they are free to look it up in seconds on the internet, to weigh the evidence, and to form their own conclusions. This interpretation of history is the task of the individual, not of the monument or of the Council.

We are but custodians of our history.

Thank you for your attention.
