Carly Stevenson is not a murderer. Heroin is. Stop using our tax dollars to jail innocent victims of our abusive society and help them!

The Issue

I am writing this letter to convey my serious concern regarding Carly Stevenson, of Montgomery County Pennsylvania, being wrongfully charged with homicide for allegedly providing her boyfriend, Brandon Cron, with heroin.   Per Jessica Parks, Inquirer Staff, in her December 13, 2013 article Montco woman charged with homicide in heroin death:  The Coroner's Office determined that Cron died from "an adverse reaction to heroin." Stevenson has struggled several years to overcome heroin addiction and was days away from getting supervised visitations with her daughter lifted and months away from regaining full legal custody of her daughter for her accomplishments.  Therefore, Stevenson can empathize for how Brandon Cron was feeling.  To withdraw from heroin is excruciating and stopping cold turkey is what keeps addicts using every single day, several times a day so they do not have to endure the suffering of the intense pain, vomiting and diarrhea.   I’m sure you are aware that heroin and other narcotics alike, such as hydrocodone, oxycodone and roxycodone, inhibit the normal functioning of the hormone oxytocin.  The more heroin use, the more it is needed for a person to feel human, to feel love. This is the very hormone that is produced as soon as we touch our mothers for the first time after birth. Oxytocin is produced from a hug, a kiss, cuddling, talking, normal human interaction, sex, birth, breast feeding, etc.  Please think about how you would feel if your body no longer produced this hormone naturally.  It would hurt tremendously and Brandon was hurting tremendously.  Even if Carly Stevenson gave Brandon Cron the heroin that killed him, she should not be held accountable for the underlying reason Brandon had to use in the first place because that is what killed Brandon Cron just as it killed, JR Pollock also of Montgomery County who died from an overdose on July 8, 2013, two days after returning from a 30 day rehab as reported by Theresa Katalinas of Horsham.patch.com in her August 15, 2013 article Heroin Forces Memorial Service, Not Birthday Celebration.  Addiction should not be fought by jailing the people who use and who are recovering.  It needs to be fought with better mental health resources for these individuals with trained professionals in addiction and imago therapy so addiction, abuse and other childhood grief can be dealt with and history stopped.  Information regarding these treatments should be easily accessible and available to the public and of no cost for this treatment, as well as by getting the makers who supply these very damaged and desperate individuals, off of our streets!  Where is the individual that made this heroin that caused an “adverse reaction?”  What in that heroin caused an “adverse reaction?”  Parks also writes:  Detectives determined that Stevenson had given Cron heroin the night before, and "tried to dispose of evidence before the police arrived," prosecutors said.  Where is that evidence and has it been tested to see exactly what was in that batch of heroin to cause an adverse reaction?  As reported by Darcy Spencer of NBC Washington in her November 26, 2013 article Recent Spike in Heroin Use in Montgomery County: “Heroin addiction is a growing problem, and Montgomery County is seeing a recent spike overdose deaths. Thirteen people have died from overdoses in the county since June.”  Carly Stevenson is not a murdered, heroin is!  Please help her so she can continue to heal from this trauma and get her daughter back into her custody where she needs to be.  Provide them with the treatment that will help so we do not create another generation for abuse and addiction.  Give Carly Stevenson a voice, give her a chance and give her daughter her mother back.  Find the real criminals, those who make these drugs to begin with.  Jailing our addicts and recovering addicts does nothing for justice.  Give them the help they need and get the makers of these drugs off our streets!  Stop using our tax dollars to jail innocent victims of our abusive society and help them!
