Save the Moorhouse hedgerows from housing development

The Issue

Hedgerows on two sides of Field 3486 in Moorhouse, Carlisle, are under threat. The site design in an amended planning application proposes removal of the hedgerows, and substitution with walls and tarmac driveways. An earlier proposal retained the hedgerows, this earlier design being backed up with local plan statements.

The hedgerows provide a vital habitat for birds and other wildlife; a recent ecological assessment of the hedgerows deemed sections of hedge to be 'species-rich'. In addition to loss of wildlife habitat, the centre of the village would also lose a much-appreciated landscape feature.

In an area of poor drainage, liable to flooding, the hedgerows play a vital role in absorbing and slowly releasing water during periods of heavy rainfall.

The Carlisle District Local Plan 2015-2030 states in section GI 6 that, Proposals for new development should provide for the protection and integration of existing trees and hedgerows where they contribute positively to a locality, and/or are of specific natural or historic value.

We seek an overturn in the proposal to remove the hedgerows on the western and southern boundaries of Field 3486, Moorhouse.
