The Carleton Administration is in the process of changing Rotblatt. They are currently in talks with members of the Rotblatt committee about these changes, but it is becoming abundantly clear that without a concerted effort from alumni and students, unprecedented changes are to be made. Possible alterations include: putting a fence around the event with security checking IDs, making the event BYOB, and moving the start time to later in the day. We believe these alterations fundamentally change the spirit of the event.
Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Over the past four years the administration has continuously infringed on several Carleton traditions, in effect taking away the trust they have historically placed in students. This has included institutionalizing the Cave to the extent that it is no longer a student-run pub, moving the Super Hero party indoors, banning kegs on campus (including at Rotblatt), reducing off-campus housing options, banning Sayles dances, exploiting Schiller for commercial purposes to the point where it is becoming an obsolete tradition, etc. All the while the school continues to advertise these traditions to prospective students and alumni as if nothing has changed.
THIS IS THE FINAL STRAW. We cannot allow the administration to continue to change the social fabric of Carleton while we stand silent. It is no longer the same school that we applied to four years ago and we shudder to think about its future.
Please sign this petition if you agree that the administration should not make changes to Rotblatt.
