30 Oct 2019

Oct 30. 2019- The City Council approved a task force committee to look into diversifying the Specialized High Schools. As usual the 19 member committee will be filled by Mayor DeBlasio and Speaker Corey Johnson who are sure to pick members who support abolishing the SHSAT. Only one Specialized High School Alumni Association member will be part of the committee.

After the Mayor gave up on his top 7% plan he promised to engage the community to come up with his next proposal. Once again these are empty words.  We can already predict who will be on the committee.

  • He will not reach out to any of the thousands who protested against abolishing the SHSAT.
  • He nor the Speaker will include representatives of the Asian community who support the test and have the most to lose.
  • He will surely fill the committee with experts and teachers who are one sided and against the test.
  • Pick students who ask for sympathy because they cannot do well on the SHSAT.
  • Any Asians will be handpicked because they oppose the test.
  • The one alumni association representative will be helpless.

This is so blatantly un-democratic and really illustrates the tyranny of the majority and the oppression on the minority.  The committee must make a recommendation by May 2020. This means another battle to KEEP the SHSAT, Support Merit, and Fight Discriminatory Intent.

Please begin to make donations at MeritFund.org and the SMFPAC.org to help vote in Pro-SHSAT candidates.  Your support this year helped defeat the Mayor’s 7% plan. Any donation big or small is acceptable.

Please do not confuse the donation sites with the Change.org request for a donation. Thank You
