The March 2nd Elections
As attested to by all international observers and local stakeholders, free and fair elections were held on Monday, March 2nd, 2020. The elections were contested by eleven parties – the major political parties being A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance for Change coalition (APNU+AFC) and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Most of the small parties are new and sprang up to contest this election. APNU+AFC and the small parties were all under-resourced. On the other hand, the PPP, with ties to former drug lords and the business community, was well financed and was able to contract the public strategy firm, Mercury, at the cost of US$34 million to manage its PR and to lobby on its behalf in Washington DC. The contract cites the OAS, Capitol Hill and State Department as targets of its lobbying effort.
