CareVet Touts Best Practices & Forefront of Veterinary Excellence Yet Allows Declawing
The Issue
CareVet.com states:
“Care That Begins With Pets in Mind… we deliver better outcomes for pets and the people who love them.”
“Excellence in Every Clinical Outcome.”
“Care You Can Trust. Our veterinarians bring the best in modern medicine to your pet’s care.”
“Care You Can Count On. Every decision we make is based on what’s best for your pet’s health, happiness and longevity.”
Yet Dr Kent Thornberry, their CVO and founder, and Greg Siwak, CEO and founder, allow declawing and many CareVet clinics perform this animal cruelty.
Declawing is the amputation of the last bone of each toe. It is widely associated with chronic pain, arthritis, behavioral issues, and reduced quality of life. Humane alternatives always exist.
A review of CareVet-affiliated hospitals shows inconsistency: some clinics refuse declawing due to ethical or medical concerns, while others continue to offer it as a routine service.
This lack of a unified policy exists even though major veterinary groups such as NVA, VCA, and PetVet Care Centers have already ended elective declawing under similar medical autonomy operational models.
CareVet cannot claim “Excellence in Every Clinical Outcome” while allowing a procedure widely recognized as inhumane, harmful, and non-therapeutic.
Veterinary professionals are also affected. Many experience moral stress when required to work in clinics where they must assist in or support declawing which they are adamantly against and know is wrong.
We are calling on CareVet leadership to:
• Ban declawing in all CareVet clinics to protect both cats and veterinary team welfare and well-being
CareVet’s Clinical Outcomes initiative is an opportunity to close a clear gap between stated values and practice.
It is time to act.
Please email Dr Thornberry and Greg Siwak and ask them to ban declawing in CareVet Clinics. Email- marketing@carevethealth.com
