We are starting the ear out slowly. It is hard for me to understand why no one cares about the stress and burden that family caregivers face.

Family caregivers, the backbone of elderly care at home, often face overwhelming burdens while caring for aging parents and older adults. They provide not just health care, but also personal care, balancing their own lives with the needs of their family members. While some opt for assisted living facilities or nursing homes, many choose to care for elderly parents at home.

The role of a family caregiver is multifaceted. They may coordinate with a geriatric care manager, arrange home health care services, or provide personal care services themselves. From grocery shopping to meal preparation, their duties extend beyond the typical caregiving tasks. In cases of severe illness, like that of Ady Barkan who suffered from A.L.S., the demand for care can be extreme, often requiring professional caregivers to assist.

The financial, emotional, and physical toll on family caregivers is immense. The cost of in-home care, whether through professional caregivers or through personal effort, can be staggering. For many, this means sacrificing their own health, career, and financial security. Community services, such as local senior centers, the Family Caregiver Alliance, or adult day care centers, offer some support, but it's often not enough. Regular medical care, including doctor's appointments and managing medical needs, adds to the complexity.

This situation underscores the urgent need for public awareness about the challenges of family caregiving. Aging in place, a preferred option for many older adults, requires adequate support for caregivers. Home health aides, community resources, and social services play a crucial role, but the onus often falls on the family members who become the primary caregiver.

For many adult children, the responsibility of caregiving impacts their own needs and future plans. The average caregiving journey lasts 6 to 8 years, during which caregivers often spend their savings and leave work, unable to prepare for their own future. This is why raising awareness and advocating for supportive policies is vital. Caregivers need access to affordable and regular respite care, healthy meals, and support from social workers to navigate their financial and legal situations.

As we start a new year, it's time to renew our commitment to family caregivers. We must support them throughout the year. It's essential to recognize their sacrifices and provide the necessary resources and recognition they deserve. Let's not delay in making a difference in the lives of these essential, yet often overlooked, members of our society. The call to action is clear: sign and share the Caregiver Relief petition for family caregivers and direct care workers, and become an active participant in supporting the noble cause of family caregiving.
