Hello! All,
As we are coming to the end of the year, I would like to thank all of you that have signed this petition. Many of you are in the throes of caregiving. No matter where you are in your caregiving journey, you will be forever changed from this experience. Some of you will have an experience that will enrich your relationship with your family member. Others will be emotionally, physically and financially devastated. The impact of the chronic stress will have a negative impact on your health for as long as 6 years after your caregiving journey. I have helped many caregivers over the years. I usually lose 2 to 3 a year to serious illness or death. Several of those I supported became homeless. Many ended up at or below poverty level.
As you are gathering with family and friends, there are millions of family caregivers feeling alone and left out. Please take time to reach out to anyone the is supporting a loved one at home. I want to encourage you to reach out to the seniors that live alone. Loneliness is rampant in the aging population.
I want to take the time to make you aware of a program that is being proposed to help family caregivers and direct care workers. It is so limited and not even close to what caregivers and care recipients need. If we do not reach out and educate others on the challenges that caregivers are facing, we lose. Nothing will change.
The National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) is a vital resource for caregivers, offering a range of services such as information, assistance, counseling, and respite care. However, while beneficial, these provisions do not fully address the broader needs and challenges faced by caregivers.
Caregivers nationwide are calling for more comprehensive support beyond what the NFCSP currently offers. They urge the need for direct financial compensation, recognizing that tax credits, while helpful, do not cover immediate financial needs like bills and groceries. Caregivers often struggle with financial stability due to the demanding nature of their role, which limits their ability to work full-time jobs or save for their future. Therefore, they advocate for benefits that contribute to retirement or social security, acknowledging their lack of savings opportunities.
Moreover, there is a growing demand for accessible healthcare specifically tailored for caregivers. Given the physical and emotional toll of caregiving, access to healthcare is crucial for maintaining their well-being.
The caregiving community is also pushing for the creation of CareTeam Partners support groups. These groups aim to provide practical support to both caregivers and their care recipients, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. This initiative aligns with the broader call for a national movement to encourage volunteerism, which can alleviate some of the burdens caregivers face by offering additional support.
Another significant aspect of the proposed changes is offering tax credits to those who provide respite care. Respite care is essential for caregivers, allowing them time to rest and attend to their personal needs. Advocates are calling for regular and affordable respite care options, recognizing that continuous caregiving without breaks can lead to burnout.
To bring these changes into effect, caregivers are encouraged to sign and support the Caregiver Relief Family Caregiver and Direct Care Worker petition. This petition is a critical step in voicing the collective needs and concerns of caregivers to the public and government, highlighting that the current support system, while helpful, falls short of addressing the full spectrum of caregivers' needs. Please encourage others to sign and share this petition.
