The caregiving sector in America is facing an unprecedented crisis, one that demands immediate attention and action. As we approach a future where over 150 million people will require caregiving services, and with 10,000 individuals turning 65 each day, the urgency of this situation cannot be overstated.
The heart of this crisis lies in the challenges faced by caregivers and direct care workers. These individuals, the backbone of the caregiving industry, are leaving due to low pay, long hours, and inadequate support. This exodus is creating a vacuum in the industry, making it difficult for seniors to stay in their homes and for facilities to accommodate more residents. The situation is further exacerbated by the inadequate measures in the CARES Act for caregivers, ENABLE Act, and other related legislation, which, while well-intentioned, fall short in providing comprehensive support.
Our mission is clear: We must change how caregivers and direct care workers are perceived and valued. It's time to secure more resources and support for these tireless workers, and to unite as an industry to showcase our solidarity and strength. This movement aims to compel the US government to recognize and act upon this crisis before it worsens.
Beginning January 1, 2020, we are taking a stand. We need 100,000 signatures in 30 days to show Congress that we mean business. This petition is a rallying cry for the caregiving industry, emphasizing the critical role caregivers play in supporting America's aging population. Without these caregivers, the lives of our seniors would be significantly impacted.
We are calling on individuals to join this movement. Together we can transform the face of caregiving nationwide. This platform is not only about demanding change but also about providing support and resources to caregivers. We are advocating for regular and affordable direct access to respite care workers. We are advocating for financial compensation for the care provided , health care for family caregivers. We are asking for better pay, benefits and improved working conditions for the direct care worker. At the present time, home care, assisted living and nursing homes are struggling to meet the needs of the growing population. At at time when we need more help, nursing homes and assisted livings are closing. The Medicare Advantage plans have such high copays, it leaves the family caregiver without any support at all. When a family has to pay $225 a day for skilled care under some of the Medicare Advantage plans, we are experiencing an unsustainable situation. This places more pressure on the family caregiver to provide care without support. The statistics for the family caregiver is already very grim. Sixty three percent of family caregivers become seriously ill or die before the person they are caring for dies. The stress and strain of caregiving is overwhelming. It is not humanly possible to one person to provide care to another 24/7. Yet, that is what society and many cultures expect.
Most importantly, we want to hear your stories. The personal experiences of caregivers highlight the human aspect of this industry, an aspect often overlooked by legislation and policymakers. By sharing these stories, we can unite, support each other, and collectively push for the change we desperately need.
Together, we can reshape the caregiving industry, ensuring that our older populations receive the care and support they deserve, and caregivers are recognized for their invaluable contributions. Join us in this crucial movement to make caregivers visible and supported, not just in law but in every aspect of our society.
Please sign and share this petition with others. The future of family caregiving needs to be addressed now.
