In the midst of a mounting caregiver crisis, we're rallying to shine a spotlight on the issue and ensure it takes center stage at the White House Aging Conference in 2025. We implore caregivers, family members, and concerned citizens to unite in signing and sharing this vital petition. The $6 trillion US care economy, encompassing both paid and unpaid services for those who can't independently support themselves, teeters on the edge.
We are Facing Unprecedented Labor Shortage Causing More Demands Placed on the Family Caregiver
Unprecedented labor shortages and economic challenges place the United States' growth at risk, compelling business and government leaders to confront the burgeoning care crisis head-on. It's imperative that we create more caregiver-centric employee experiences and bolster business resilience to foster post-COVID economic growth.
Each of us can easily picture the daily struggles faced by caregivers - from parents soothing upset children to nurses assisting elderly patients with their daily routines. These are fundamental aspects of our lives, yet what often goes unnoticed is the emotional toll of caregiving. Many are forced to abandon their careers and education to care for their loved ones, while others exit the industry due to low wages and grueling hours.
Now, envision these scenarios multiplied by millions, impacting every job and contributing to the $6 trillion care economy's risk of collapse within the United States. This economy encompasses both paid and unpaid services and involves those who provide care services to individuals unable to independently support themselves, contributing a significant portion to the US gross domestic product (GDP).
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, with historic labor shortages and mounting economic challenges, a substantial portion of US growth hangs in the balance. According to BCG research, if we do not enhance the care economy, the US could lose $290 billion in GDP by 2030, equivalent to Connecticut's entire state GDP. Extreme forecasts predict a GDP loss of approximately $500 billion in 2030, underscoring the critical need for leaders to address this escalating crisis.
Direct Care Worker Shortage
The caregiver shortage is acutely felt by older adults across America. In-home caregiving aides play a pivotal role in assisting aging individuals who cannot fully care for themselves. This shortage affects not only those with no family support but also those supplementing family care. States like Maine, with a high percentage of residents aged 65 and older, face nearly 11,000 hours of unstaffed personal care each week, preventing some from being discharged from hospitals. This crisis is not unique to Maine, with states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania grappling with a shortage of caregiving positions.
Our aging population desires to age in place and avoid nursing homes, leading to high demand for in-home caregivers. The positions of home health and personal care aides are projected to grow at a rate higher than the average for all occupations over the next decade. The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates a 25 percent growth in employment for these jobs by 2031, with more than 700,000 openings projected annually over the next decade.
The Impact on Family Caregivers
In this crisis, it's vital to recognize that the lack of professional working caregivers will adversely impact family caregivers. The chronic stress and burden of caregiving already result in 63% of family caregivers becoming seriously ill or passing away before the person they are caring for. Moreover, as Medicare Advantage plans impose high co-pays and total out-of-pocket expenses continue to soar, family caregivers face increasing pressure to provide care at home for their family members.
We must act urgently to address this caregiver crisis, both for the well-being of our loved ones and the sustainability of our economy. Sign and share this petition to amplify our voices, ensuring that the caregiver crisis takes center stage at the White House Aging Conference in 2025. Together, we can drive change and create a brighter future for caregivers and those in need of care. Help us help future caregivers. Encourage others to sign
