Carden Circus: The Show must NOT go on: Ban Circus Animal Abuse

The Issue

Pontchartrain Convention & Civic Center in Kenner, Louisiana has made the disappointing decision to schedule Carden Circus on September 23rd, 24th and 25th. Over the years, the Carden Family has held captive Tigers, Elephants, Camels, Zebras and Bears for use in various circuses that they work with. Carden Family Circuses has a LONG history of animal rights violations dating back to 1994. These violations include infractions from the USDA that involve danger to the animals AND to the public.

It has been reported that these upcoming events will include Elephants.

Some of the many violations that Carden Family has been cited for involves knowingly including Elephants in performances who have tested positive for Tuberculosis. These same Elephants were found to be without water, with bruised feet standing on concrete, not receiving proper veterinary care. The Carden Family has been cited for multiple violations regarding the Elephants that include abuse and mishandling that endangered the Elephants and the public. There was even an incident where an Elephant got shot and killed in a drive by shooting and another where two Elephants had to use their bodies to prop up the vehicle that was transporting them when it got stuck in the mud. Violation after violation does not seem to deter the Carden family from abusing and mistreating their animals because as recently as January of this year, their family continues to be cited for mishandling their animals (Carden Family Circus Animal Rights Violations).

We ask that Pontchartrain Convention & Civic Center cancels all of the upcoming Carden Circus events. We also ask that they cease scheduling Circuses that include wild animals and other traveling animal shows at their event center. We acknowledge that every traveling Circus that currently uses wild animals has been cited for animal rights violations. We acknowledge that Circuses do not need to include wild animals to be entertaining; human entertainers and technological advances allow for a fun yet ethical and safe environment for everyone. We also acknowledge that the banning of the use of wild animals in traveling shows is imminent not only in our area but also nationally. Six states (California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, New Jersey and Hawaii, with Connecticut very close) have already banned or strictly limited the use of animals in traveling shows. There has also been an act introduced to the US Congress called The Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act (TEAPSPA) which seeks to amend the Animal Welfare Act to prohibit the use of wild animals in traveling performances. Take Action now!

We call upon Pontchartrain Convention Center and their parent company, ASM Global to do the right thing by canceling the Carden Circus Events and ending any further involvement with traveling shows that use wild animals.

We also call upon our local lawmakers City of Kenner Council Member Joey Lahatte Kenner Mayor Michael J Glaser and Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards to ban all traveling events that include the use of wild animals.

If you believe that life in a cage, traveling from city to city, without adequate space, care or nutrition, all for the entertainment of others is no life for any life, sign this petition to cancel the currently scheduled Carden Circus in Kenner, LA on September 23, 24, 25 and to ban traveling shows that include wild animals in Louisiana.

Contact Pontchartrain Convention & Civic Center to ask them to cancel this event and to forgo future events that include traveling wild animal shows. Their parent company, ASM Global.

Please also take the next step by contacting local lawmakers to demand they stop allowing traveling shows that include wild animals to perform in our state.
