Car Free Day on Belle Isle

Car Free Day on Belle Isle
Why this petition matters

For over 100 years, cars have dominated Detroit's beautiful island park in the Detroit River. According to research, between 2015 and 2020 there were 105 crashes involving 254 people. 25 resulted in injury, 15 were hit and runs, 9 involved drinking, 7 bicyclists hit, 1 pedestrian hit, and 1 was fatal. Ideally it should be more, but I'm asking for a minimum of just one day a month that Belle Isle is car free for a whole day. The DDOT bus would still be allowed on the island but the every road should be open to people on foot & bicycle so individuals and families can enjoy the park without fear of injury from cars or trucks. The DNR trolley service could remain as well to help shuttle people around but no cars, trucks or SUVs should be allowed for a day. Write to the Belle Isle Advisory Committee today and let them know your thoughts. They meet monthly and your comments will be read aloud.
