Capitol CMG: Drop the Newsboys Now – End Complicity in Abuse Cover-Ups

Capitol CMG: Drop the Newsboys Now – End Complicity in Abuse Cover-Ups
The Issue
To: Universal Music Group (Parent Company of Capitol CMG), Capitol CMG Leadership, and the Christian Music Industry at Large
The Christian music community, and indeed all who believe in accountability and justice, are reeling from the disturbing revelations surrounding Michael Tait, former lead singer of the Newsboys, and the alleged complicity of Wes Campbell, the band's long-time manager and owner of First Company Management.
Michael Tait himself has admitted to "reckless and destructive behavior, including drug and alcohol abuse and sexual activity," and that he "touched men in an unwanted sensual way." These admissions follow detailed reports of sexual assault, grooming, and substance abuse spanning years.
Even more alarmingly, investigative journalism has brought forward credible allegations that Wes Campbell actively silenced victims and covered up Tait's alleged misconduct. This isn't just about one individual's actions; it points to a systemic failure and an alleged culture of protection within the band's leadership.
By continuing to promote and profit from the Newsboys, Capitol CMG (and its parent company, Universal Music Group) is directly associated with and seen as complicit in enabling harm and silencing victims within the Christian music industry. This association deeply compromises the integrity of the label and the broader message of faith that Christian music is meant to convey.
We, the undersigned, demand that Capitol CMG immediately terminate its contract with the Newsboys.
This is not merely a request for a business decision; it is a moral imperative. Dropping the Newsboys would send a powerful message:
- To Victims: That their voices are heard and valued, and that those who allegedly enabled or covered up abuse will face consequences.
- To the Christian Music Industry: That accountability, transparency, and the protection of vulnerable individuals must always outweigh commercial interests and celebrity status.
- To the Public: That labels will not stand by silently when serious allegations of abuse and cover-ups come to light within their artist rosters.
We urge Capitol CMG to act decisively and ethically. Separate yourselves from this alleged pattern of abuse and cover-ups. Demonstrate your commitment to justice and your responsibility to the community you serve.
Sign this petition to demand that Capitol CMG drop the Newsboys and commit to a future of true accountability in Christian music.
