Hi everyone,

I want to express my strong opposition to the recently approved development of two AI data centres in Cape Town.
These facilities place significant pressure on local infrastructure and the environment. My concerns include:

•    Continuous noise from cooling systems, fans, transformers and backup generators 
•    Increased electricity demand and further pressure on the power grid 
•    High water consumption for cooling 
•    Air pollution and emissions 
•    Damage to wildlife, natural habitats and indigenous vegetation 
•    Light pollution affecting residents, birds and insects 
•    Increased heat in surrounding areas 
•    Private companies benefiting while residents carry the environmental and infrastructure burden 
•    PFAS contamination and electromagnetic exposure (Radiation) 
•    International countries having a direct say in this without consent and approval from local parties
 
Cape Town already faces serious pressure on its electricity supply, water resources and natural environment. I do not support the construction of large-scale AI data centres that may worsen these existing challenges.

I am concerned about the long-term impact of continuous exposure to noise, pollution, heat and industrial activity. We also need to take into consideration, that these are being built near water sources. The impact this will have on our and our children’s health is vast.

I have personally contacted Foxglove, the Legal Resources Centre and Housing Assembly to ask how we can formally support the opposition to this development. Foxglove has responded, and I am currently in communication with them.
