Cap adoption fees to ensure affordability and transparency
The Issue
For many years, I have been witnessing families dream of expanding through adoption, only to have those dreams thwarted by exorbitant fees. Adoption is meant to be a solution, a way to build loving families, but instead, many adoption agencies, both domestic and international, have turned what should be a compassionate service into an unaffordable burden. The issue of excessively high adoption fees not only limits accessibility to many families but also generates excessive net incomes for agencies that should instead focus on the welfare of children.
Adoptive families, already facing the emotional challenges of the adoption process, are further stressed by the lack of transparency in fee structures. Many families are left unable to reconcile where their adoption fees are being allocated, creating the impression that fees are being unnecessarily inflated for adoption agency personal financial gain. The current situation demands a cap on adoption fees to prevent prices from reaching a level that effectively commercializes adoption and alienates families financially.
To create a fairer adoption process, I am calling for the implementation of several crucial changes:
1. **Introduce a Cap on Adoption Fees:** Establish a maximum limit on what agencies can charge, ensuring the process remains accessible to families from various economic backgrounds.
2. **Enhance Transparency and Accountability:** Require agencies to provide a detailed and clear fee structure that accurately reflects the time and services provided. This will include a mandatory breakdown of expenses such as legal fees, which must be supported by a central registry of receipts for any outside services obtained.
3. **Create a Centralized Fee Registry:** Establish a national or international repository where adoptive families can access records of agency fee structures and associated costs, thus enabling informed decision-making across agencies, countries of interest, and more.
Adoption should not be a privilege only the wealthy can afford. By capping adoption fees and demanding clearer accountability, we can make adoption a more reachable goal for countless families eager to give a home to children in need. As someone deeply passionate about this issue, I believe we must act now, not only for current and future adoptive families but also to uphold the integrity and purpose of adoption itself.
Sign this petition to call upon lawmakers and relevant adoption authorities to enact these changes, ensuring that adoption remains a viable, transparent, and loving option for families worldwide.
