Why this petition matters

Started by Health and Wellness Lab, Faculty of Kinesiology, University of Calgary

Cancer is our most prevalent chronic disease - we all have someone we know, love, live with, are friends with, or work with, who has cancer. While treatments result in more and more people surviving cancer, there is a gap in our cancer care system for a focus on wellness in the cancer journey.

Exercise is an evidence-based supportive cancer care tool THAT WORKS. The benefits include physical improvements (like functional improvements or ability to engage in activities of daily living), psychosocial improvements (less stress, depression, anxiety) and overall enhanced quality of life.

Yet nowhere in Canada is exercise part of cancer care. In Alberta, we have been building evidence-based programs for cancer survivors for almost 20 years. We know what works - with participants telling us that we are helping them "get their lives back", and "empowering them to move more for health and wellness" during their cancer journey.

We have the evidence, and see our cancer survivor participants thriving, with movement enhancing their physical and emotional well-being. We want to make sure all cancer survivors have access to exercise oncology programs. Your support, will help us change the system. Healthier cancer survivors enjoy a better quality of life, and save the health care system money. Your voice, along with our exercise oncology evidence, will allow us to advocate for support for exercise programs for all cancer survivors.

PLEASE NOTE - we need your signature ONLY! Any donations made support the circulation of the grant through change.org, but do NOT SUPPORT our cancer exercise programs directly. If you want to make a donation, please contact us at wellnesslab@ucalgary.ca.
