We believe that in the Republic of Korea, a liberal democracy, it is unacceptable for war and Putin's supporters to become richer. We have no doubt that South Korean citizens do not want to be affiliated with allies of the North Korean Kim Jong-un, such as Putin, Gergiev, Spivakov, and other members of the Russian regime.

Recently, two performances by the Bolshoi Ballet in Korea were canceled due to strong protests from anti-war activists and the Ukrainian embassy. However, it is somewhat disappointing that the cancellation was made citing technical issues. For example, the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts took issue with the Bolshoi Concert organizers changing the title and content of the performance.
최근 볼쇼이 발레단의 내한공연 2회가 반전운동가들과 우크라이나 대사관의 항의로 취소됐다. 다만 기술적인 문제를 명분으로 취소가 이루어진 점은 다소 아쉽다. 예를 들어 세종문화회관은 볼쇼이 콘서트 주최측이 공연 제목과 내용을 바꾼 것을 문제삼았다.
We do not think this is the biggest problem for the canceled concerts or for future concerts by Russian musicians. The biggest problem is the war Russia is waging in Ukraine, destroying entire cities and villages and killing hundreds of thousands of people.

First, his art is used by the Putin regime as a propaganda tool to whitewash Russia's image. Some Koreans support Russia in this war because they love Russian culture, including literature, ballet, and classical music. They simply cannot believe that a country with such beautiful culture could become a cruel invader and imperialist power.

After the war is over and Putin is tried in court as a war criminal, there will be time to repair relations with Russia and become friends. This is when cultural exchange becomes useful. But for now, such exchanges are useless at best and harmful at worst.

Understanding all this is very important, as there will likely be more attempts in the future by Russian performers loyal to Putin to come to the country to make money and improve the image of Russia under Putin. They can no longer perform in Europe or the United States, where they are boycotted, so for them Korea is a rare opportunity to shine. This is because some concert promoters in Korea do not seem to care about ties these performers have with the murderous Putin regime.

We want to emphasize that we are not against Russian culture per se, nor do we want to “cancel” it. From our perspective, it is okay for Korean musicians to play Rachmaninoff or Stravinsky, for example, and it is okay for foreign concert halls to generally welcome Russian musicians. We are specifically against people like Spivakov, who share responsibility for the death and destruction caused to Ukraine and its people by supporting Putin and his criminal military adventures.

We want to emphasize that we are not against Russian culture per se, nor do we want to “cancel” it. From our perspective, it is okay for Korean musicians to play Rachmaninoff or Stravinsky, for example, and it is okay for foreign concert halls to generally welcome Russian musicians. We are specifically against people like Spivakov, who share responsibility for the death and destruction caused to Ukraine and its people by supporting Putin and his criminal military adventures.
