Cancel Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disneyland
The Issue
On January 23rd, 2023, Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World closed because its material it linked back to has “inaccurate depictions of history” and may offend some. (Song of the South info at the end) The Splash Mountain ride itself contains none of the potentially harmful material which the movie has. However, Disney is now choosing to remake the ride as a salt mine based on Avery Island, where actual slaves died and are still buried. This is incredibly insensitive considering how Disney is having Tiana and her family and friends from “The Princess and the Frog” work at the salt mine, just like the slaves that used to work there too. The point being, a ride based off of an old, misunderstood movie with all the harmful material being taken out of it is much less harmful than a lazy attempt at giving Tiana the representation she deserves by making her work at a salt mine based on a tragic, real event. Disney World’s Splash Mountain is already closed, we have 18 days from the day this posts until Disneyland’s closes. Leave Disneyland’s Splash Mountain ALONE.
The offensive material it links back to is the 1946 movie “Song of the South” which is about a young white boy named Johnny forming a bond and friendship with Uncle Remus, who tells Johnny about the tales of Brer Rabbit. The tales themselves contain some offensive dialect as well as a doll made out of tar. However, viewers should not be so quick to judge just because of what they see on the surface. James Baskett (actor who played Uncle Remus) was very proud of this movie along with the other people of color who worked on this project. The movie takes place after the Civil War, and Uncle Remus leaves the plantation later in the movie just so Disney can show the audience that he is a free man. Disney should not be ashamed of this movie, for it was just a misunderstanding due to the time period.
