Cancel the Maccabi Youth Games 2024 taking place at the University of Hertfordshire
The Issue
The Maccabi Games are an Israeli international multi-sport event, the third largest sporting event in the world, and are open to Israeli citizens from around the world. The 2024 European Maccabi Youth Games are expected to be held at the University of Hertfordshire over the summer.
Whilst this has not yet been confirmed by the University itself, we have received information via multiple sources regarding this event; during these games the University plans to display the Israeli flag all across campus. Our primary concern lies with the acceptance of Israeli funding for the event, as it is problematic for a university to receive money from a state that is currently under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, with the figures surpassing 30,000 Palestinians killed. The ongoing dire humanitarian disaster in Gaza cannot even be put into words.
Accepting funds from such a source raises serious ethical and moral questions about the university's commitment to upholding human rights and standing against injustice, especially as they have insisted on maintaining a neutral stance regarding the situation in Palestine.
Furthermore, it seems hypocritical for the University of Hertfordshire to allow the Israeli flag to be flown while refusing to display the Palestinian flag or colours of the LRC in solidarity with the Palestinian people. This decision was justified on the grounds of neutrality, but it raises questions about the university's commitment to inclusivity and respect for all communities.
We believe that hosting the Maccabi Games would not only create an intimidating and hostile environment for students on campus, but also denying a platform for Palestinian expression while entertaining Israeli-sponsored events only serves to exacerbate tensions and perpetuate injustice.
We refuse to allow such an alarming, inconsiderate and disrespectful event go ahead on our campus!
Please sign this petition if you share our concerns and believe that universities have a responsibility to act ethically and uphold the values of justice and inclusivity!
