The Issue

We propose that, for the sake of humanity, HBO immediately announce the cancellation of The Last of Us TV series so it ends with Ellie getting shot in the face.

This is because:

  1. The developments of the second season render any further production pointless, even for the purposes of mockery.
  2. It would be really funny.

Season 2 Ellie is an objectively terrible and unlikable character; a charisma vacuum whose screen presence drains the soul of joy (Ellie's gay by the way). She abandons her injured pregnant girlfriend to torture an innocent woman and abandons her adoptive uncle so she can kill a baby, then cried about it like she's the victim.

This isn't really entertainment as much as it is flogging Neil Druckmann's fetish for moral bankruptcy and child murder (Ellie's gay, by the way).

It's also wild that it doesn't even occur to Ellie or anyone else that, as the only human immune to cordyceps, she might have some responsibility to the human race to procreate despite her own sexuality. This would be a powerful emotional conflict, but the implication that the ultra-violent post-apocalypse might not be politically-correct is apparently too terrible for our Neil to contemplate (unlike, of course, murdering children... which is a totally valid and empowering moral choice).

Isabela Merced gives a decent performance as Dina but can't carry the show on her own. Kaitlyn Dever can emote fairly well as Abby aka Gigantor, but she doesn't have much to work with character-wise and looks a little ridiculous in a role that was (charitably) a muscle mommy in the source material.

The only other interesting characters are dead (Ellie's gay, by the way). Joel got teed off early in the season in an even more humiliating scene than was in the game. Mel and her baby got the Ashli Babbit treatment. Even if Tommy survives being shot in the leg, he's just Joel ordered from Wish.

The dirtiest-done was Jesse. By far the most interesting character of the second season and a natural counter-balance to Ellie, HBO assassinated his character before shooting him in the head... Because his last act was reassuring Ellie that he knew she'd go through hell to save him if he was in trouble (which she literally just failed to do with Tommy a few hours before).

There is nothing of value remaining in The Last of Us and no way to salvage it from Neil Druckmann's terrible creative decisions, nor does it appear that there is appetite for significant departures from his failures (Ellie's gay, by the way).

The best ending for everyone would be for it all to end with the fade to black immediately after Ellie got shot in the face. It would both be a satisfying conclusion to her narrative arc and 100% deserved.
