I am writing this petition to ask for your support in honoring those who have served our country by cancelling school on November 11, 2025, Veterans Day, within the Northside Independent School District (NISD) in San Antonio, Texas. This  because I believe that Veterans Day is a time for us all to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by our service members.

Veterans Day is a significant date for Americans. It is a day set aside to honor and remember the brave individuals who have served in our armed forces to protect the freedoms we cherish. While many institutions and businesses observe this day to remember and respect their sacrifices, it is vital that our educational institutions do the same. Observing Veterans Day as a school holiday would provide students with the opportunity to engage in community events, volunteer activities, and educational experiences focused on understanding the role and sacrifices of our veterans.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were approximately 18 million veterans in the United States in 2020. The state of Texas alone is home to over 1.4 million veterans, making it essential for our local communities, particularly in San Antonio and within the NISD, to observe and respect this day.

Changing the school calendar to recognize Veterans Day as a holiday would not only allow students and families in NISD to participate more fully in remembrance activities but would also promote a greater understanding and appreciation for the duties and sacrifices of our veterans. Recognizing this day reflects our commitment to honoring those who served and fosters a culture of gratitude and respect within our community.

I urge the Northside Independent School District and its board members to take this crucial step in respecting our veterans by cancelling school on Veterans Day, November 11, 2025. This action will send a powerful message of respect and recognition not only to the veterans but also to their families and the community at large.
