The Issue

We all know the feeling of needing just one more day to catch up on sleep, to relax, and to recharge. For many of us students in Gainesville, the weekdays can be exhausting, and the weekends feel way too short. We are constantly juggling classes, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities, leaving us drained by the time Monday comes around.

One extra day off could mean a world of difference for us. It could improve our mental health, allow us to spend more time with our families, and enhance our performance in school. Research has shown that more rest can lead to better productivity and improved learning outcomes. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teenagers require about 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night to function best. Yet, surveys indicate that only 15% of teens report getting more than 8 hours of sleep on school nights.

Given these facts, we are calling on the local school board to consider canceling school on Tuesday, even if just temporarily, to give students a much-needed break. We believe this change would be incredibly beneficial, allowing us to return to school more focused and ready to learn.

Sign this petition if you agree that a small change in the schedule could lead to a big improvement in the lives of Gainesville students.
