Cancel school on Friday, 1/10/25

The Issue

Us students of Fairfax have had the last 4 days of school of due to the conditions of the snow. Roads and sidewalks have been caked in snow and transportation is much harder as of now.

With us getting a two hour delay on Friday, it is hard to see the viability of having one day of school and risking the transportation of kids to school in these cold, harsh conditions.

Students have spoken out, protesting against this two hour delay. I have two examples on hand.

First - "I am writing to formally request that Fairfax County Public Schools close for the day due to the current inclement weather conditions. As a concerned parent/community member, I am aware of the safety risks posed by the severe weather, including slippery roads, low visibility, and hazardous conditions for both students and staff.

Given the forecasted [snow/ice/etc.] and the potential for dangerous travel conditions throughout the day, I believe it is in the best interest of our community to prioritize the safety and well-being of our children and school employees. Other local school districts have already made similar decisions to ensure that students and staff are not exposed to unnecessary risks.

I kindly urge the board to make the decision to close schools for the day to allow everyone to stay safe and secure at home. Thank you for considering this request, and I appreciate your dedication to the safety of our community."

Second - "It's not safe for there to be school tomorrow when there are icy roads because the risk of accidents increases significantly. Icy conditions make it difficult for vehicles, including school buses, to maintain traction and control, leading to potential skidding and collisions. Additionally, students who walk to school are at risk of slipping and injuring themselves on the ice. The safety of students and staff should be the top priority, and it's better to cancel school to prevent any potential harm. Ensuring everyone's well-being is more important than holding classes on a day when travel conditions are hazardous."

These two students have given great reasons on why school on Friday is a bad idea. So, to the admins of Fairfax County, please reconsider your decision.
