Cancel Problematic Play With Racist History
The Issue
The Problematic Origins of “And Then There Were None”
Hello, Cub Community, Parents, Staff, Community Supporters, and Faculty,
It has come to our attention at B.A.S.E (Black Awareness Society for Education) and Student Voice that the fall play/production of, And Then There Were None had an original name that contained racist derogatory remarks along with a blatantly racist plot and lines of sexism. We here at B.A.S.E and Student Voice do not believe that the contents of this play represent what our club communities represent and most importantly what we as the community of U of D Jesuit represent.
Performances are Thursday (10/23) at 7:00 PM, Friday (10/24) at 7:30 PM, and Saturday (10/25) at 7:30 PM at Marygrove College Theatre. These are the reasons why we believe this play shouldn’t be put on and cancelled. We know and understand that the kids in the play have put in a tremendous amount of work, but we won’t in good conscience go unheard and unnoticed. Check this link for more context and history.
We wished to attach previous versions of the book cover but due to Change.Org guidelines, we are unable to because of its offensive nature. This is an example of how harmful this writing is to African Americans and Indigenous People.
