I am a concerned member of the Burke county community. As we shiver in our homes in response to the freezing temperatures, my concerns grow for the students and staff in our local schools. The harsh cold is not only uncomfortable, it's dangerous. Unrealistic expectations of travel during inclement weather put our community at risk. According to weather forecasts, we are set to experience snow on the 19th further increasing these risks and concerns.

Accidents increase by 20% during adverse weather conditions (Federal Highway Administration), winter weather being a significant contributor. Canceling or calling off school on February 18-19 would prioritize the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff.

Cold weather and snow shouldn't compromise our children's safety or education. The school district should take the responsible step to cancel or close the schools on these dates, enabling our children and staff to remain safe at home.
