Cancel Netflix's decision to drop support for PS3

Cancel Netflix's decision to drop support for PS3
Le problème
As of February 2026, PS3 users such as myself have been alarmed by the recent end of support warning on the PS3's Netflix app. These users are now greeted with a message stating "Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026. Visit netflix.com/compatibledevices for a list of supported devices. (R40)"
While Netflix itself is yet to confirm this via official communication, several websites have already reported on the veracity of this warning.
The PS3 still has a very large user base, with over 2 million active users reported in 2023. Despite its age, the PS3 remains a favoured console for many, not just for gaming, but also for streaming services like Netflix. The PS3's CPU, its secret to longevity and thereby crucial for Netflix streaming, is actually more powerful than the PS4's CPU, which continues to enjoy Netflix's support. This decision not only affects individual users but also entire households that rely on their PS3 for streaming entertainment. Ultimately, this decision also risks alienating hundreds of thousands of users and might represent an own goal for Netflix, should these users be left with no available streaming platform and thus cancel their paid subscription (the only one that works on the PS3).
Conversely, the Prime Video application is alive and well on the PS3, with no end support planned in the foreseeable future. Which could cause Netflix to lose out to competition to Prime Video on this platform and more broadly.
Netflix's decision to drop support for PS3 could be reconsidered with a better understanding of the impact it will have on a significant portion of their user base. Transitioning away from older systems is understandable, but the PS3's strong infrastructure argues for its continued support. For example, the PS3 store is still functional on Sony's website and still allows purchases, unlike the Xbox 360 and Wii U stores, as a testimony to the PS3's resilience by Sony itself.
One of the reasons that Netflix cancelled its Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U apps was these consoles' technical inability to output native 1080p video and dwindling user base. These reasons do not apply to the PS3, especially given that the base PS4 model itself can only do 1080p as well (on Netflix too), just like the PS3.
Another major drawback to pull support for the PS3 is that this particularly affects those using the PS3 to watch 4:3 content on older CRT TVs. With the Netflix PS3 app on top being the only platform where watching full-screen, 4:3 video without bottom and side bars (due to windowboxing) due to Netflix now being a 16:9 app-only on all other platforms. For a true watching experience, we thus urge Netflix to reconsider dropping native 4:3 support for the many 4:3 shows it currently offers by extending the lifespan of its PS3 app.
Finally, while it is understandable that since Netflix has enforced location to prevent watching from different locations, it is very likely that the PS3 Netflix app could be updated to support location too and thus remove every reason that Netflix has to drop PS3 support.
One potential solution is for Netflix to evaluate the technical feasibility of maintaining support for the PS3. By doing so, Netflix can help maintain its foothold in the growing streaming service market while ensuring that a significant portion of their user base can continue enjoying Netflix.
Join us in calling on Netflix to reassess this decision and maintain its support for the PS3. By signing this petition, you will show Netflix that its PS3 user base is still strong and worth supporting, and encourage them to keep the PS3 platform alive for millions of subscribers who depend on it for entertainment. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and stand for continued PS3 support. Together, we can make a difference.
