The Issue
iready is boring. It is so boring, that I am making this petition. I want to cancel I-ready. It's the worst. Especially math. All my life I've had to do I-ready. It's boring. What's the point? I don't learn that much. Sign this petition if you agree. Sign it if you don't agree. If you do sign this I will appreciate you. If we cancel I-ready you can help kids across the world not be bored. 99% of kids around the globe don't learn from this. Believe me, I did 1 minute of research. If it doesn't get canceled then I will be bored. Act now if you care about children's mental health.
One day last week, I was so bored that I decided to throw glitter all over my room. My mom was so mad, she took away my phone and made me clean it all up. A week later I am still finding glitter everywhere. Experts are saying that boredom is good for us and that we need more of it. Some people may agree and think that boredom would improve our lives. Others may disagree and believe that boredom is not good for us and it is tearing us down. Having more boredom in our lives can be harmful and make us unhappy.
Boredom can lead to anxiety because we don’t know what to do with ourselves. When we have anxiety we build stress and are unhappy. According to the article, boredom can lead us to anxiety and question our free time. This shows that when we are anxious, about being bored we become stressed out about not doing anything. In conclusion, boredom can lead to anxiety which is bad for our mental health.
Another reason is that boredom can lead to destructive behaviors like drug or alcohol abuse. When people are bored they tend to act impulsively and make bad decisions. The author states, “ Some studies show that people who cannot cope with boredom are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol.” This proves that boredom is more harmful than helpful when people do not know what to do. Overall, boredom can lead people to do things that are damaging to their mental and physical lives.
It might be true that, in default mode, our brain is introspective, reflecting on experiences. However, sometimes we can overthink the planning and ideas for the future. Therefore, excess boredom can cause analysis paralysis, which will prevent people from actually accomplishing anything.
In conclusion, People experiencing more boredom can be dangerous and ruin their lives. Boredom can negatively affect people by giving them anxiety and stress. Additionally, boredom can lead people to make destructive choices with their actions or time. Therefore, it is ver critically important to for people to avoid boredom so they can live with less stress and temptations to act out with destructive behaviors. If kids use I ready they will be bored!
This school year Fairfax County Public Schools, the 10th largest school division in the United States, adopted the iReady assessment as a universal screener across all of its elementary schools. Students in grades K-6 take these assessments individually on the computer three times per year, and the results are made available to both teachers and parents.
So, what does that mean for these students’ instruction? What does it mean for how we position teachers to view their students? Will it mean that instead of rich mathematical experiences these students are relegated to computer-based or scripted intervention (conveniently sold by the same company that makes the assessment)? Will it mean that these students are denied access to the bigger picture of what it means to do mathematics and be a mathematician and are instead are fed a steady diet of, in the words of the makers of iReady, tiny discrete skills “down to the sub-skill level”?
According to Curriculum Associates, the company that makes iReady, these assessments are an “adaptive Diagnostic for reading and mathematics [that] pinpoints student need down to the sub-skill level, and [provides] ongoing progress monitoring [to] show whether students are on track to achieve end-of-year targets.”
