The Issue

In the heart of Toronto, pigeons are a common presence, adding to the unique character of our vibrant city. Like many Torontonians, I find joy in observing these resilient, city-dwelling birds. However, a recent announcement by Councillor Lily Cheng has troubled me greatly. The initiation of an 'Anti-Pigeon Photo-Contest' is not only unscientific but deeply troubling, as it promotes a misguided perspective on these birds.

Pigeons have coexisted with humans for centuries, playing an essential role in urban ecosystems. They are often misunderstood and unjustly vilified. Encouraging animosity through photography contests is neither ethical nor aligned with scientific understanding of these creatures. It serves to pit citizens against wildlife, fostering an environment of division rather than appreciation.

Photography is a powerful tool for storytelling and celebrating urban biodiversity, not for breeding disdain. Instead of holding an anti-pigeon contest, we should leverage photography to educate and promote coexistence. Let's use this medium to enlighten the public about pigeons' ecological contributions and foster respect for all native wildlife.

Toronto, a city celebrated for its inclusiveness and diversity, must reflect these values in the way we treat all its inhabitants, including pigeons. By promoting respect and harmony with our urban wildlife, we safeguard the vibrant and diverse cityscape we cherish.

I urge Councillor Lily Cheng to reconsider this initiative. Let's celebrate our city, its people, and its wildlife positively and inclusively. Please sign this petition to cancel the "Anti-Pigeon Photo-Contest" and advocate for a respectful approach towards our urban avian friends.
