I raised this petition because I care about the rights that current and future UK citizens will lose if the UK leaves Europe, and because the EU Referendum result was achieved after a campaign that involved misinformation from Leave; most of that giving the impression that the failures of successive Governments to address problems were as a result of EU membership. Since then, the actions taken by the Government on the basis of a marginal referendum result and the will of 37% of eligible voters have been alarming. My reasons for raising the petition remain unchanged but I have become more convinced that it is vital for MPs to be given the opportunity to demonstrate that they (as our elected representatives) think that Brexit is in the best interest of the UK. If this is not done, they will continue to hide behind 'the will of the 37%' and any problems that arise in the foreseeable future will be excused by future Governments with a statement such as "Well, we did what the people wanted and must suffer the consequences as a country." If all MPs are not allowed a free vote on whether Brexit should be cancelled or not we will not be able to hold future Governments (of any Party) to account for many years. Recently, they voted to allow the Withdrawal Bill to progress and this is an ominous sign that MPs are still, largely, allowing party politics to dominate and are not exercising their personal judgements. Thank You for your support so far. Please continue to help me to achieve a free vote for MPs upon whether Brexit should be cancelled or allowed to progress whilst they still have some influence over the Government.
