Cancel bigot Matt Walsh's upcoming event at the University of Alabama
The Issue
Matt Walsh is a racist, sexist, and outspokenly transphobic and anti-LGBT conservative commentator whose hatred extends especially towards women and LGBT youth. The University of Alabama chapter of YAF, a conservative organization, is hosting Walsh at the University of Alabama on Thursday, October 27th, where he will have a platform to spread bigotry, violent incision, and hatred under the guise of 'free speech' and 'traditional values'.
This affects EVERYONE IN THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA COMMUNITY.
Sign this petition to get University higher-ups involved and cancel the Matt Walsh event, which, if allowed to occur, will foster hate on campus and encourage bigotry and potentially even violence against minorities.
Walsh's dangerous and bigoted viewpoints on our campus will give hatred, bigotry, and violence a university-sponsored platform, and allowing this event to occur on UA's campus goes directly against the ideals of a university that claims to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Walsh cannot be allowed to speak on campus, much less receive University funding to speak here through YAF: he will actively damage our culture of welcoming diversity, kindness, and inclusion, instead coming from a place of hatred and bigotry - below are a lists of his bigoted beliefs with references.
On Walsh's current tour, which is coming to UA unless it is stopped, he is currently campaigning against children's hospitals that offer gender-affirming healthcare, comparing doctors who offer this lifesaving procedure to Nazis, pedophiles, and serial killers, while at the same time advocating for political violence, saying as early as 2010 in the context of 'conservative political commentary,' "if you want extreme things to happen, you have to be willing to take — to go to extremes. … Everyone keeps bringing up our Founding Fathers. They were willing to pick up guns and kill people for what they wanted."
Walsh has advocated for "real men" to commit physical violence against drag queens, conversion therapy for queer children, violence against abortion providers, and another civil war / secession, arguing that America "lost our republic after Reconstruction."
Even this week, an interview with Walsh came out in which he insisted that 16 year olds were sexually mature adults who could and should make their own decisions.
Walsh is also a proponent of white replacement theory, saying verbatim that "as the Anglo-Saxons [white people], which were the original Americans, die off, our [American] identity and our culture goes with it.” This is an incredibly dangerous and racist ideology that is commonly pushed by white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and the far right, and any advocate for it should not and cannot be allowed a platform on our university campus.
