Dear Canadian Tamil Congress Board of Directors:
With deep sadness and feeling of betrayal, the undersigned former CTC (Canadian Tamil Congress) members, contributors, current supporters and sponsors would like to draw your attention hoping that you would reconsider your decision on inviting the Sri Lankan State propaganda tool Rupavahini to invade Tamil Canadian Thai Pongal event. The Sri Lankan State propaganda played a very significant role in war crimes and genocide of Tamils since it started in 1982, and it acted similar to Nazi propaganda during WW2. We would like to point out that both Sri Lankan military and Rupavahini played equivalent roles in crimes against humanity and war crimes. While the Sri Lankan military executed orders, tortured and exterminated Tamils, Rupavahini played a noticeable, dehumanizing role in branding the slaughtered victims as terrorists, twisted and concealed the facts, and promoted Sri Lanka’s war crimes committed by the military and State. We would also like to point out that Sri Lankan military officials were appointed as directors of this propaganda wing in the past. (Ref. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7306473.stm)
The CTC was built by means of many dedicated, self-devoted Canadian Tamil’s contribution. Since the inception in 2001, many Tamil Canadians contributed to CTC trusting that it will be a voice for Canadian Tamils and for the voiceless Tamils in Eelam. Please note that CTC is supposed to be a collective congress of many Tamil Canadians and not just a property of current board of directors or its executives.
We would like to remind the current board of directors about CTC’s vision in the past. It states, “We, the members, do establish this Constitution for the Canadian Tamil Congress in order to form a congress of our people, for our people and by our people based on the principles of justice and peace amongst ourselves, and to provide for a common voice in promoting our general welfare and prosperity.“
We never thought that CTC would undermine justice and human rights, become a tool of Sri Lankan State and even go to an extent to shamefully promote the Sri Lankan State propaganda tool as genuine media.
We would further like to bring to your attention that on November 8, 2017, CTC with other Tamil organizations asked the Attorney General Wilson-Raybould to commence an investigation into war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide citing that Sri Lankan UN peacekeeping mission should be prohibited from entry into Canada. By allowing and promoting the Sri Lankan State propaganda tool, CTC is even dishonest to its co-signed organizations just within two months.
UN resolution passed in 2015 (https://www.channel4.com/news/the-unhrc-adopts-consensus-resolution-on-sri-lanka) and extended in 2017 requires implementation of hybrid court including foreign judges to investigate war crimes. Many Human Rights activists and Tamil Diaspora organizations worked tirelessly educating international communities in the past 8 years. Still Sri Lankan State opposes foreign judges and made no progress on accountability. By promoting the Sri Lankan propaganda tool voluntarily and necessarily, CTC softens the pressure that supposed to be applied on Sri Lanka to deliver justice. Please note that while British Channel-4 media exposed evidence of war crimes, the Sri Lankan propaganda tool that you promote even now tried its best to protect its war crimes of the military.
Before taking any final decision on allowing Sri Lankan State propaganda to invade Tamil Canadian event, we would like to request the Canadian Tamil Congress board of directors to:
1. Reconsider your decision
2. Get approval from your members explicitly and publicly state that large number of members support and oppose your decision.
3. Please release CTC membership count for each passed year and also a decision of this nature needs public opinion and create a mechanism to capture the opinion in transparent manner.
Former Canadian Tamil Congress members, contributors, supporters and sponsors who are deeply disturbed by this action of congress.
