Take proactive measures to diversify the Canadian museums sector

Take proactive measures to diversify the Canadian museums sector

The Issue

We represent Canadian Museums Association (CMA) members and museum professionals who are committed to creating a more diverse and inclusive museum sector. We are calling on the CMA, in keeping with its own vision, goals and strategic plan, to take proactive measures to continually progress towards this goal.

Specifically, we call on the CMA to:
1. Conduct an ongoing national diversity survey of Canadian public museums and galleries.

• Data collected will highlight the number of culturally diverse, Indigenous, and/or disabled Canadians currently engaged as board members, staff and volunteers; how the experiences, histories and artistic practices of diverse Canadians and diaspora are represented in curatorial and exhibition programming; and how diverse communities are engaged through education and public programs.

2. Strategically support Canadian museums in diversifying their human resources, curatorial programming, and education and public programming by leveraging CMA programs and resources.
• Strengthen and increase strategic priorities that promote and increase diversity, through such programs as Young Canada Works, internship programs and CMA bursary programs;
• Create professional development and training programs for museum sector workers to build their knowledge and skills to effectively performing diversity and inclusion work.

3. Create internal mechanisms and benchmarks that monitor annual progress and process within all levels of the CMA (i.e., board of directors, staff, interns, Fellows, conference presenters, Muse contributors, etc.) to ensure accountability for its diversity and inclusion efforts.

4. Research and develop new strategies, initiatives, and roles dedicated to adequately addressing the lack of diversity within the Canadian museum sector.
