Mandatory minimum sentences for people convicted of cruelty to animals.

Mandatory minimum sentences for people convicted of cruelty to animals.

The Issue

November 9, 2013- Nero, a 7-week old puppy who was recently found north of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. He apparently had flammable liquid poured on him and was lit on fire. As a result, he lost both of his ears, may have life-long injuries to his eyes, and is at serious risk of infection.

October, 2013 - A man accused of abusing a puppy in Turner Valley had his charges stayed in court after failing to appear. William Daniel Goyette, 20, was charged with wounding and maiming an animal, and breaching a condition of his release. The charges stem from March 13 in Turner Valley where an 8-week old puppy was punched, kicked, and thrown several feet. As a result, the dog sustained a broken jaw and three fractured legs.

July 2013 - 61 abused and severely malnourished dogs found kept in two buildings with no windows and were never allowed outside. Many of these animals were wounded and covered in feces. At least 34 of these dogs were euthanized because of the horrific condition they were in. Some were sent to a shelter in the USA. Several charges against the pair who held these dogs were stayed. The maximum penalty is six months in jail and a $5,000 fine.

These are only three examples, but the list goes on and on. When are animal abusers going to be held accountable for their acts of cruelty and suffering?

Please let our Justice Minister know that we demand stiffer penalties for animal abusers.  They start with animals, then move onto people - we're all threatened by these individuals and they need to be rooted out and dealt with.  Show your support by signing this petition.  This petition will be sent out on February 1, 2014, so please sign and share, share, share!
