Kwey, Tomorrow morning, December 7, 2017 at 8:30 am Sharon McIvor, Pamela Palmater, and Shelagh Day of the Feminist Alliance for International Action (FAFIA) will participate in a public hearing with the Inter American Human Rights Committee (IAHRC) speaking about Canada’s continued refusal to eliminate all the sex discrimination in the Indian Act through Bill S-3 which is currently moving through parliament. The issue they will address is the matter of the continued sex discrimination that Indigenous women born prior to 1951, and their descendants continue to face through Canada’s application of the inferior form of Indian status registration known as 6(1)c. Although Canada has said it will address the pre 1951 discrimination there is no date commitment and in this way this promise is the same as what happened in 2010 with Bill C-3 and in 1985 with Bill C-31 where in the end no remedy materialized. I am not sure of the exact link - meaning you may have to look around to find it – but I suggest starting here: http://www.oas.org/en/iachr/default.asp I really do not know but possibly it will be posted live on the IAHRC facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CIDH.OEA/ Be sure to tune in.
