The Issue

  • Anyone who owns a pet has to take them to the vet for essential vaccines and treatments. A vet visit with vaccines and treatments can come up to 100's of dollars and these costs are hard for many to afford. In addition to the cost of treatment and vaccines, there is also a sales tax which adds up to 13% in Ontario. For a $500 vet visit which is a common amount there would be a $65 sales tax  which makes it more unaffordable and is very inequitable.

The government of Canada as well as the provinces have the power to remove sales tax. This would be similar to how food isn't taxed because it is essential. Veterinary care is also essential for the health of animals as well as public health. In addition sales tax on essential items and services increases inequity as everyone including poorer people have to use these services.

There are also many vaccines that animals must recieve for public health reasons including the rabies shot. Many people may decide to not get there animals these vaccines due to the cost and the 13% sales tax just makes it less appealing.

In conclusion the sales tax on vet bills makes things harder for people to get their animals essential vet care. It increases inequity as it is a essential service. It also discourages people from getting there animals essential vaccines for public health.
