Canadian Government Must Ban Islamic Republic's Officials from Canada

The Issue

Dear Minister,

It is with a deep sense of disappointment and alarm that we learnt that a former minister of Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyyed Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi, who served as the Health Minister between 2013 and 2019, was roaming the streets of Montréal and Toronto as part of his holidays! In addition to serving on the government’s cabinet, there are reports that Ghazizadeh Hashemi was, in the past, collaborating with Lebanon’s Hezbollah which is designated as a terrorist organization by Canada.

His presence, among many previous visits of Islamic Republic regime’s officials, is in blatant contrast to the words of Prime Minister Trudeau’s statement to Iranians that “we hear your voices, we hear your calls for action”.

Announced measures so far, including listing 10,000 Iranian officials as “inadmissible” to Canada, rings hollow in the face of admission of a high-ranking minister to our country.
What we find most appalling is that there are two sets of rules: One for regular, hard-working, law-abiding Iranians and their families who are victimized by this regime, and the second for the officials of a regime whom your government has repeatedly described as “brutal” (1)

It is bitterly ironic that this “renowned” ophthalmologist is enjoying his vacations in Canada while many young Iranian protestors who lost one or both eyes during Woman Life Freedom uprising, as a result of being intentionally shot by the regime’s security forces, are struggling for basic medical care. Some of these courageous Iranians are awaiting a response to their demand for asylum to Canada while remaining in precarious conditions in Iran’s neighbouring countries. Is Canada supposed to be a refuge for victims of brutal regimes or a safe haven for current and former officials of such governments?(2)

We remind you that willful or negligent act of allowing a former minister of a cruel regime responsible for murdering Canadian citizens is not only a slap in the face of the Iranian community in Canada but also a major security risk to this community and the larger Canadian society. In his first response to the concerns raised about his visit to Canada by prominent members of the Iranian Canadian community, Ghazizadeh shamelessly used language that was interpreted by many community members as offensive and threatening.

In the wake of this deplorable development in flagrant violation of your government’s previous measures, we demand the following without any further delay:

-Immediate removal of Ghazizadeh Hashemi and his companions from Canada
-A full investigation into the process that granted Hashemi visa and later on admission to Canada
-An in-depth review of how the 10,000 sanctioned Islamic Republic officials were identified and what concrete measures have been taken to ensure their inadmissibility to Canada
-Immediate action in collaboration with security and intelligence bodies as well as the Iranian community to prepare an accurate, comprehensive list of present and former Islamic Republic’s officials
