Change the New Brunswick Animal Rights Laws Regarding Animal Cruelty

I am starting this petition to have changes made to the New Brunswick Animal Protection Act. I would like to get at least 2,000 signatures in the next 30 days to be able to take this to my local MP to have the petition backed by them.

There is not enough punishment for animal abusers and too many abuse and neglect cases falling between the cracks because the laws are too strict and require more then one offense in the category. For example, in the NB animal protection act, it states that failing to provide food, water, shelter, and care to an animal can be punishable with a $500 - $200,000 fine, however, in order to actually be charged for this, the abuser needs to have done all four instead of just one. This is basically allowing abusers to get away with causing an animal suffering because they are not fitting all four issues. I would like this petition to change this law to be able to charge these abusers when they fit just one of these issues.

Another example is that the laws consider animals as a person's propery, instead of treating the animals as if they are a living, breathing being. I would like to have this petition change the way animals are seen, they are not property. They can't speak for themselves. They aren't able to state when they are being abused or are injured. For example, if someone takes in a stray cat that ends up having an owner but has been neglected, and there is proof of neglect, the owner should not be able to have the animal back in their possession where it's not in the best interest of the animal. Currently that is how the animal protection laws are because they are considered the person's property.

If we continue to allow these laws to go the way they are, we won't see a change. We will continue to see animals suffering and not be able to do anything about it, even when Animal Protection officers get involved. If you feel the same as I do and you want to be a voice for those who don't have one, sign this and share it. Make a difference.
