Canada: The Time to Take a Strong Stance Against Antisemitism is Now. Stand with us!
The Issue
Dear Prime Minister,
On October 7th, Israel suffered the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust. 1400 people were murdered, in the most cruel and depraved manner, and hundreds, including babies, toddlers and raped teenagers, were kidnapped and taken hostage.
Immediately following the terrorist attack, before Israel even responded, our grief shifted to fear, as crowds took to the streets to celebrate the October 7th massacre.
THE HATRED OF JEWS IS NOW RAMPANT IN CANADA AND THE JEWISH COMMUNITY IS AFRAID.
At the Pro-Palestinian (anti-Israel) rallies, the attack of 10/7 has been glorified. Members of our community have been subjected to threats, racial slurs, and intimidation (including the Nazi salute). Nazi symbols and Holocaust imagery is on proud display, like the sign seen at a recent rally in Calgary that depicted an image of Adolf Hitler with the word “Auschwitz” featured in prominent letters. The pervasive theme at these rallies is not peace or criticism of Israel’s handling of the war, but rather Holocaust inversion (the new antisemitism) and the elimination of the state of Israel and the ethnic cleansing (genocide) of Jews, “ From the river to the Sea.”
The hateful rhetoric emanating from these rallies has been shown, time and time again, to inspire actual physical violence against the Jewish population. This violence is not limited to the protests, but also puts the greater Jewish community at risk, particularly at our schools, and religious and cultural institutions.
No matter your stance on the Middle Eastern conflict, we can all agree that the Jewish Community in Canada deserves to feel safe. The Government of Canada needs to do more to ensure that it does.
In light of the increased risk to the Jewish people in Canada, we call on you to, forthwith:
(1) publicly and unequivocally denounce the antisemitism that is being expressed and promoted at these rallies and that in doing so, you reinforce the IHRA‘s definition of antisemitism, that Canada has adopted, which includes the demonization and delegitimization of Israel; and further
(2) make it abundantly clear that any individual who communicates a direct threat, incitement to violence, and or supports international terrorism will be charged criminally and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Signed,
Concerned Citizens of Canada
