We did it -- all 27,000 of us! It seemed like a long shot when this petition was launched, but it will soon reach our desired goal. On November 30, two days before the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the Federal Government announced its tabling of the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In the next few weeks the House of Commons will vote on adopting the Protocol we asked it to sign two years ago. The full text of the announcement may be found at the site provided below, which contains welcome and supportive words from the Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, the Hon. Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Hon. Jody Wilson-Raubould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. The government's announcement echoes what we advocated for, the need to safeguard disability rights in Canada. Supporters are encouraged to read and share this information with others. The next and final update will announce the results of the vote, as well as any further news on the new Canadian Accessibility Act that will govern how disability rights will be monitored and enforced throughout Canada. Let's celebrate our successful efforts to advocate for the protocol's adoption. Thanks to the 27,000 Canadians who lent their names in support of this worthy cause. Thanks to Change.org for helping to make this happen. Thanks to all who have supported the cause and petition by spreading the word.
