CANADA - APOLOGIZE FOR POSTWAR FORCED ADOPTION AND GIVE ADOPTEES ALL THEIR INFO!
The Issue
Forced adoption in Canada occurred from WWII and continued until the 1970s. Victims of this practice (birth mothers as well as adoptees) are entitled to an apology from Canada. Knowing about Forced Adoption is nothing new and has been widely reported. In 2018, the Canadian Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology published a report entitled "The Shame is Ours - Forced Adoptions of the Babies of Unmarried Mothers in Post-war Canada" (https://sencanada.ca/content/sen/committee/421/SOCI/reports/SOCI_27th_e.pdf). So far, the Canadian Government has passed the buck to the various Provinces as to whether adopted children can receive all their birth information - or not. An apology has not been forthcoming, rather it seems to have been overlooked.
It is a basic human rights issue for any child who was put up for adoption (whether forced or not) to have access to what is essentially their information. In many cases these adopted children (now adults) are flying blind with regard to their right to know familial medical and mental health issues. The stress that biological mothers suffered from being forced to give their babies up for adoption most likely adversely affected their children's development in the womb, and since sperm and eggs are developed in utero, these mother's childrens' children are most likely also adversely affected, as will be future generations to come. Many adoptees are being denied access to free information regarding their biological parents. In other cases there is a Do Not Contact order on file, so information wouldn't be available, even if it IS free of charge. Other adoptees have received heavily-redacted documents when requesting it under the Freedom of Information Act in their Province.
It is way past time for Canada to recognize that Forced Adoption amounts to being a crime against Canadian citizens - both mothers and the babies born to them. Canada should apologize to both the birth mothers and their children. It's time for Canada and the Provinces to stop covering up and protecting themselves (as well as biological parents who lived in a different time in history). Give adoptees ALL their (unredacted and uncensored) information - free of charge - and without hesitation. Australia apologized in 2013. Ireland apologized in 2015. Belgium apologized in 2021. Wales apologized in 2023. The Government of Canada has been sitting on this report and its recommendations since 2018. It's time for this issue to come to the forefront and be acted on - and not be shuffled to the bottom of the pile again and again and again.
